Types of post-WWI collectible German Currency:
  • Notgeld: Just following WWI, the German national government was unable to print currency fast enough to keep up with consumer demand. This forced the individual towns and municipalities to design and print their own, resulting in a vast array of beautiful colors and designs. Unless otherwise specified, the Notgeld carried on our website is in crisp-uncirculated condition.
  • Inflation/Hyperinflation Notes: From 1922-1923, Germany hit a devastating period of hyperinflation, in which a loaf of bread hit 45 billion marks, and panicked Germans found that their entire life savings would not even buy a postage stamp (the cost of which ultimately soared to 500 billion marks!). It was not uncommon for citizens to burn their devalued banknotes in their woodstoves for heat, since it was cheaper and burned longer than the firewood the money could buy. Both the German media and government were openly blaming the shattered economy on Jewish bankers and financers - all at a time when a young and furious Adolf Hitler was forming the early Nazi party, vowing to return Germany to its former (pre-WWI) prosperity. This makes the inflationary notes fascinating conversation pieces, as well as very much sought-after by collector/historians in the know.
  • Third Reich Coins and Currency: We carry a complete line of coins (and historic other collectibles) from the Third Reich under our Reich Collectibles tab - all bearing the swastika-bearing War Eagle on back, as Adolf Hitler abolished the standard Mark and implemented the Reichsmark shortly after gaining power. We also carry a very limited line of Third Reich currency - which is becoming harder to find as the shrinking number of surviving specimens disappear into permanent collections. So it Third Reich banknotes is an area of interest to you, we strongly encourage you to buy when you see them available!
