Dr. Josef Goebbels, Reich Minister for Public Enlighenment and Propaganda, left no stone unturned when it came to use of propaganda during the Third Reich. Earning a Ph.D from Heidelberg University in 18c romantic drama, he worked as a journalist, and then a bank clerk - writing plays and novels, but they were refused by publishers. A man of very slight build, he became Minister of Propaganda in 1933 - and through his riveting speeches and brilliant strategic skills, he ensured that propagandic imagery and messages met the eyes of German citizens at every turn. Even postage stamps and postcards were used to this means: providing compelling glimpses of how deeply embedded Nazi imagery was in the everyday lives of the citizens.

Aryan Composer Series with Bach
3 used/cancelled 1942 stamps of the "Aryan" composer series, featuring Bach, Handel and Schultz! Like all other Third Reich Stamps, these were tools of propaganda, since under Hitler, even music was "aryanized" - where works by non-Aryan composers such as Mendelssohn were banned, and the good "aryan" composers were glorified. These stamps are very hard to come by, and a great find for the armchair historian who is also a lover of classical music.

DEATHMASK Stamp
